Also known as West Rogers Park or Northtown, the West Ridge community area of Chicago is in the far north part of Chicago with Evanston directly to the north, and Lincolnwood and Skokie to the west. In the early 1800s, this area was predominantly inhabited by Native American tribes including the Pottawattomie, Chippewa, and Ottawa. After settlement by German and Luxembourger farmers in the 1830's and 1840's, the area continued to remain very rural, mainly farms and greenhouses. The area was still known as Ridgeville then.
After incorporating in 1890 and being annexed by Chicago in 1893, the West Ridge area experienced its primary growth spurts after WWI and WWII. The end of World War I brough a real estate boom to the area with bungalows and two-flats being the prime residential structures in the neighborhood. The end of World War II brought another surge in growth in the area. Parks! West Ridge is rich in wonderful city parks. At the Indian Boundary Park, you'll find a small zoo, a duck-filled lake, tennis courts, a fountain, a huge playground, and lots of activities year-round. At Warren Park, you'll find no less than a golf course, tobogan hill, batting cages, ice skating rink, and a skate boarding area! There are several others to explore as well.
